SISTER TERESA WEED, 1921 – 2014

Sister Teresa Weed, formerly known as Mother Mary Louis, died on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Calvary Hospital. Teresa was a member of the community of St. Teresa in New Rochelle. She entered the Ursulines in 1939 and made her first profession of vows on January 22, 1942. In 1945 she began teaching at Blessed Sacrament School in New Rochelle. In 1947 she earned a B.A. in English from the College of New Rochelle.

From 1948 to 1961 she taught in the lower school of The Ursuline School in New Rochelle. From there, she served at the Ursuline Academy in Bethesda, MD, until 1972, returning to teach at New Rochelle Catholic Elementary School from 1972 to 1991. She then began a new ministry, working with children at the Headstart Children’s Center for Learning from 1991 to 2009 as an assistant teacher, and from 2009 to 2013, she volunteered as a Foster Grandparent. Teresa was known for her gentle care for children, guiding and assisting them as they grew up. She brought those same qualities to her role in the formation of young sisters. During the years 1992 to 2004, Teresa was editor of Bylines, an Ursuline province newsletter.

Teresa was born on October 15, 1921 in New York to Teresa and Louis Weed. She had one sister, Betty Lou Adair, who predeceased her; she also has 5 nieces and nephews. Wake will be held at the Province Center Chapel, Sunday, March 30, 2014, from 3 to 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Province Center Chapel at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in New Rochelle. In place of flowers, gifts may be sent to the Ursuline Retirement Fund, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10804.
