Sister Adelaide Thomason died peacefully at Andrus on Hudson on August 21. She was 93 years old. Adelaide was born on November 30, 1921. She is survived by a sister, Dolores Melitio of Dallas, and five nieces and nephews.

She entered the Ursulines in 1939, after graduating from the Ursuline Academy in Dallas, Texas. Her final profession was on January 16, 1945. She earned a B.A. in English from the College of New Rochelle in 1945. She received her Masters Degree in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America in 1954, and her Doctorate in Philosophy from Fordham University in 1969.

Adelaide’s lifelong ministry was education. From 1945 – 1959 she taught at the Ursuline Academy in Dallas. From 1960 – 1963 she served as Assistant Superior at the Ursuline House of Studies in New Rochelle. From 1960 – 2006 she taught in the Philosophy Department at the College of New Rochelle, where she was a gifted teacher. Much of her effectiveness came from her diligence in remaining up to date in the discipline, alert to contemporary philosophers and developments in the field. In 1980 and from 2004 – 2007 she was an NGO at the United Nations representing the International Federation of Catholic Universities.

At Sister Adelaide’s request, she will be cremated and there will be no wake. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 25th, at the Ursuline Province Center Chapel, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers gifts may be sent to the Ursuline Retirement Fund at the Ursuline Province Center.
