Obituary for Sr. Martha Gleason, OSU

Sister Martha Gleason, OSU, 84, died peacefully at Andrus on Hudson, Hastings on Hudson, February 1, 2021. Sister Martha, known in religion as Veronica, was born in Boston, MA, the seventh child of Mary and Clarence Gleason.  Martha attended Ursuline Academy, Boston, the College of New Rochelle, the Catholic University of America, and the Weston School of Theology. Sr. Martha, a Classics major, was a consummate educator, spending hours with her students. Sister introduced the Peer Ministry program to Ursuline School and was instrumental in expanding the Music Dept. at Ursuline.  She believed in the giftedness of each individual person and encouraged all she met to develop to their fullest potential.

Martha taught at the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula, Ursuline School, Ursuline Academy, Dedham, MA, served as Provincial of the Northeast Province, and in the Diocese of Maine. Sr. Martha is predeceased by her parents and siblings and is survived by one niece.

Donations in Sr. Martha’s memory may be made to the Ursuline Sisters Retirement Fund, 1338 North Ave., New Rochelle, NY 10804. Due to the Covid-pandemic, no services will be held at this time. Interment will be in the family plot on Cape Cod, as per her wishes.
