Obituary and Funeral Liturgy Sr. Geraldine Kennedy


Sr. Geraldine Kennedy, OSU, (aka M. Evangelist) died peacefully, November 26th, 2022 at the United Hebrew of New Rochelle. Born in New York, October 11, 1941, she was the daughter of Margaret and William Kennedy.

Geraldine attended the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula for her Elementary and Secondary education. She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, DC with a BA in English and from Catholic University with an MA in English. On returning to New York, Geraldine taught at St. Jerome’s, Our Lady of Mercy, and her Alma Mater, the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula.

The mid-eighties found Geraldine pursuing a new ministry, a legal aid attorney with an emphasis on elder care. She graduated from Pace University with a JD degree and as attorney, worked in this capacity in Brooklyn and Queens for over 25 years, retiring in 2018 to do Pro Bono services for Queens Legal Services.

Geraldine was an avid reader, particularly interested in the lives of prominent historical figures. Always interested in learning new things, sister was able to visit other Ursuline ministries and communities throughout the world as she traveled home from a period of study in Rome. She was active in social justice projects, especially if they involved justice issues involving senior citizens.

Geraldine was a member of the NYS bar, but also those of the US District Court, Southern and Eastern Districts, NJ Bar, DC Bar, and the US Supreme Court. She used her expertise in legal areas by serving on several of Boards of Trustees within the civic community and in the Ursuline community

Sister Geraldine is predeceased by her parents Margaret and William. She is survived by one brother, Kevin Kennedy.

Arrangements are as follows: Visitation, December 1, 2022: 9:15am – 10:45am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10804. Burial following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Gifts made in Sr. Geraldine’s memory may be sent to the Ursuline Province Center. Lloyd Maxcy is in charge of arrangements
