Obituary and Funeral Liturgy of Sr. Frances Lyle, OSU

Sister Frances Lyle, OSU (aka Mary Carmel), died peacefully at the United Hebrew Home of New Rochelle, May 10th, 2022. Sr. Frances was born on July 12, 1924, in Bridgeport, Ct. She was the daughter of Sarah McNiff Lyle and Henry F. Lyle. She attended Central High School in Bridgeport, the College of New Rochelle, and Fordham University in the Bronx. Her fields of study were Biology and Chemistry.
Following her graduation from New Rochelle in 1946, she entered the Ursuline community in Beacon, NY. For many years, Sr. Frances taught in both Elementary and Secondary schools including Blessed Sacrament, NR, Ursuline Academy, Bethesda, MD, Our Lady of Mercy, Academy of Mt. St. Ursula, and St. Angela’s, all in the Bronx.
Sr. Frances’ journey took her farther afield as she ministered in Caracas, Venezuela, Subiaco Mission, and St. Bede’s Lebowa, both in Africa. When Sr. Frances returned to the United States, she served in several administrative positions both at the College of New Rochelle, and the Ursuline Provincialate. She was community leader at St. Angela’s, Bronx and at the Ursuline Convent in Wilmington, De.
She is predeceased by her parents, her siblings, and is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held Monday, May 16th, 9:15 to 10:15 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Services will be held at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Ave., New Rochelle, NY, 19804. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla. Donations may be made to the Ursuline Sisters retirement fund. Lloyd Maxcy and Sons is in charge of the arrangements.
