Obituary and Funeral Liturgy Information for Sr. Bridget Puzon, OSU
Sr. Bridget Puzon, OSU, a beloved member of the Ursuline community, died peacefully September 21, 2022 at Andrus on Hudson, Hastings on Hudson, NY. Born August 4, 1931 in New York City, Sr. Bridget graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1957. She went on to earn additional degrees in English: an MA from Boston College, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Sr. Bridget’s 35-year ministry in Education began at St Joseph’s Ursuline Academy in Malone, NY. She was instrumental in the founding of the Ursuline Academy in Dedham, MA and then taught at the Ursuline School in New Rochelle, and ultimately, the CNR English department. In 1973, she joined the English faculty at Hollins University in Virginia, where she was Chaplain and Assistant to the President. In 1978, Sr. Bridget began a six-year tenure as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at CNR. After a year as Visiting Scholar at Harvard, she returned to Hollins as Dean of the College. During this time, she also served on the Ursulines’ Provincial Council. In 1993 she became Academic Editor and Editor of Liberal Education at the Association of American Colleges and Universities in Washington, DC, a position she held until 2004. Sr. Bridget then served as Director of Advancement and Communications for the Ursuline Province for 12 years.
Sr. Bridget has been a member of the Boards of Trustees at the Ursuline Academy in Wilmington DE, the Academy of Mount St. Ursula in the Bronx, and The Ursuline School. She has provided leadership and expertise to the Brookland Commission in Washington D.C., the Angela Spirituality Group, and the Center for Religious Ethic and Culture at the College of the Holy Cross, among many others. Sr. Bridget published Women Religious and the Intellectual Life in 1994.
Sr. Bridget is the last of her immediate family.
Funeral arrangements for Sr. Bridget are as follows: viewing will be at the Ursuline Provincialate, 1338 North Ave., New Rochelle 3-5 PM on Sunday, September 25th. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 26th, at 10:30 AM in the Ursuline Province Center Chapel.
