Sr. Geraldine Kennedy, OSU Celebrates her Golden Jubilee as an Ursuline Sister on March 17, 2017!

One of Sister Geraldine Kennedy’s Ursuline Sisters remembers her walking up the stairs of the courthouse  in Brooklyn with a heavy legal briefcase.  Her mission was to advocate for an elderly person in need of her legal expertise through the Brooklyn Legal Services which, for 17 years, is one of many ways she has worked tirelessly to help the elderly during her half a century of service as an Ursuline Sister.

Sr. Geraldine was born in New York, NY and she professed her vows as an Ursuline Sister on March 17, 1967.  She earned a BA in English from Trinity College, Washington, an MA in English from Catholic University of America, and a JD from Pace University School of Law.  She is a member of the Bar in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC, admitted to the US District Courts of New York and New Jersey, and the US Supreme Court.

Sr. Geraldine began teaching in the Bronx at Our Lady of Mercy and St. Jerome’s School, 1969-71, and at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula from 1971-81.  She was a popular teacher but left to pursue her legal studies from 1982-1984.  She also served on the Board of Trustees for the Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, DE.

As an attorney, she worked for the Brookdale Center (CUNY), 1985-87; Brooklyn Legal Services, 1989-2007, and for the Department for the Aging, 2007-2011.  She was a member of the Westchester County Council for Seniors, 2008-2011, and associate director for LifeWay Network, Inc., 2009-2012.  Since 2013 Sr. Geraldine has been a pro bono attorney for Queens (NY) Legal Services.  In addition, Sr. Geraldine served on the Board of the Leviticus Fund in Elmsford, NY, 1999-2007, and continues to serve on the Board.  She also served on the Board of the Legal Studies Department, NYC College of Technology, 1997-2002.  She has been a trustee of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, Angela House, and the Ursuline Marian Residence.  She was a member and director of the Bedford Park Convent Corp, and associate superior of the Bedford Park Community, 1972-82.

We wish Sr. Geraldine much joy as she celebrates her Golden Jubilee as an Ursuline Sister.  In the words of St. Angela Merici, founder of the Ursulines, “With the help of God, you will do much good for others” which encapsulates the ministry of Sr. Geraldine and all Ursulines.
