Obituary for Sr. Marian Bohen, OSU
Sr. Marian Bohen, a beloved member of the Ursuline Community, died peacefully on December 9, 2018 at Andrus on Hudson, Hastings, NY.
Sr. Marian was born Sarah Frances to Marion and Mark Bohen, in Minneapolis, MN in 1930.
Sr. Marian graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1954. Sr. Marian undertook study at Regina Mundi in Rome and earned a Ph.D. in Religious Education at the Catholic University of America. She then embarked on a 25-year educational ministry in Indonesia. Her many contributions there include teaching new Ursuline sisters, as a professor of theology at the University of Indonesia and the Atma Jaya Catholic University, teacher/director at the Catechetical Institute in Jakarta.
After returning to the US in the late 1980s Sr. Marian took faculty positions at Marist College and the Maryknoll School of Theology. In 1989 she began a long and productive affiliation with Sing Sing Prison, serving as an associate professor and coordinator of the New York Theological Seminary’s Certificate in Ministry program at the prison, and later taught for the Rising Hope program which succeeded it. It was noted that she “taught a number of courses, recruited volunteers, shaped the curriculum, maintained and effective relationship with Sing Sing administration, and managed every aspect of the program.”
Sister has donated her body to science. A memorial Mass will be held at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Ave. on December 14th at 4:00pm. Calling hours will begin at 3:00 pm with a prayer service.
