Sullivan, O.S.U., Sr. Gloria Marie
Ursuline Sister Gloria Marie Sullivan, O.S.U. died peacefully at Andrus-on-Hudson on September 26, 2016. She was one of four children born to Joseph A. Sullivan and Mary A. Phillips in Yonkers, New York. Her parents and her brother, Rev. Jordan Sullivan, O.F.M. Cap predeceased her. She graduated from Gorton High School, Yonkers NY in 1941 and the College of New Rochelle in 1945 earning a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Math before entering the Ursuline Novitiate on July 15, 1945. After religious profession she studied at Fordham University earning a Master’s of Science Degree in Math in 1945.
After graduation, Sr. Gloria began teaching at The Ursuline School, New Rochelle from 1949-1960, and then spent her Tertianship in Rome from 1960-1961. She served as principal of the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula, Bronx, NY from 1961-1963 and then went on to serve as Assistant Dean at the College of New Rochelle from 1963-1965 returning to teaching at the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula from 1969 until 1982. The Archdiocese of New York asked her to serve as the Microcomputer Coordinator in their Data Systems department from 1985 until 1991. Sr. Gloria served as a Parish Financial Assistant to St. Catherine’s Church from 1988 until 2007, as provincial secretary to the Ursuline Provincialate from 1991-1997, as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Philip Neri Church in the Bronx, NY and volunteered in the nursery at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Yonkers from 1998-2007. In 1998, Sr. Gloria returned to the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula as an Advanced Mathematics Teacher from 1998-2000 while also serving as a clerical assistant at the Ursuline Marian Residence from 2000-2002 and as a Child Care Assistant/ER Patient Advocate at St. John’s Riverside Hospital from 2001-2007. She concluded her lifetime of service with a Ministry of Prayer in retirement from 2009 until her death.
Sr. Gloria served in various leadership positions within the Ursuline order including Local Councilor for the Bedford Park Community, Bronx, NY from 1961-1963, Local Councilor for the Ursuline House of Studies, New Rochelle, NY from 1963-1965, Assistant Superior from 1965-1966, Superior from 1966-1969, Member of the Board of Trustees for the College of New Rochelle from 1966-1969, Local Councilor Bedford Park Community from 1969-1973, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula from 1969-1972 and Local Councilor of the Bedford Park Community.
Like many Ursuline Sisters, Sr. Gloria loved the earth and those who peopled it. She had a tremendous love for her family as well as her students and sisters expressed by the kind and gentle way she interacted with others. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
Sr. Gloria is survived by her sister, Janice A. Sullivan of Pittsford, NY and her brother, Col. Roland R. Sullivan of Cornwall, NY. Her wake will be held on Thursday, September 29, from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M.at the Ursuline Provincialate Chapel, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY, 10804 followed by a prayer service at 3:00 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will also be offered there at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Ursuline Provincialate, same address. The burial, at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Yonkers, will be held privately the next day.
