Obituary and Funeral Liturgy for Sr. Mildre Haipt, OSU

Sr. Mildred Haipt, OSU, formerly Sr. Maria Carl, a beloved member of the Ursulines of the Roman Union, Eastern Province USA, for 72 years, died peacefully on August 4, 2026, at Andrus on Hudson Nursing Home.

Sr. Mildred was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Theresa Messner and Carl Haipt on October 15, 1928. Shortly after graduating from Fordham University with a bachelor’s degree in social studies, she entered the Ursuline Community and professed her vows on January 16, 1954.

Sr. Mildred went on to earn a master’s degree in Educational Psychology from Fordham University and a doctoral degree in Educational Administration, Supervision, and Curriculum from the University of Maryland. She began her ministry in education as a teacher at Ursuline high schools in New Rochelle, New York; Wilmington, Delaware; and Bethesda, Maryland. Recognized as an outstanding educator, she later joined the faculty of the Education Department at the College of New Rochelle.

Sr. “Millie,” as she was affectionately known by colleagues and students, also served as Director of Education for the Ursulines of the Eastern Province. Her professional yet gentle manner endeared her to the many student teachers she supervised throughout Westchester County. She also served on the Boards of Trustees of the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula in the Bronx, New York; Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Delaware; and The Ursuline School in New Rochelle, New York. One of her most cherished memories was serving as a visiting scholar and teacher at Assumption University in Hua Hin, Thailand.

In her retirement years, Sr. Mildred founded and served as Chair of Serviam Girls Academy, a middle school for girls based on the Nativity-Miguel school model, in Wilmington, Delaware. During this time, she also served as Superior of the Ursuline Sisters community.

Sr. Mildred will be remembered by her Ursuline Sisters and many friends for her creative and unwavering commitment to education, her genuine interest in every person she met, and her kind and unassuming manner.

She is survived by her Ursuline Sisters and her loving cousins.

Visitation for Sr. Mildred will be held on Tuesday, August 11, beginning at 9:15 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Both services will take place at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, New York.
